MODERN MEDICAL PRACTICE FIT FOR HISTORICAL VILLAGE

When accommodation was planned for an expanding medical practice in a Scottish village near Aberdeen, a product was required to fit in with the village’s 19th century structures.

Fyfestone’s Elite Split in Mink was chosen for the 5,000 sq ft development in Edzell. Located within the village high street, it was essential that its external design was able to merge with the picturesque village’s 150-year-old natural granite stone.

As a high quality and economic alternative to natural stone, Elite Split is both cost effective and easy to lay, and so is specified in preference in conventional facing brick for those wanting a more distinctive masonry appearance.

The state of the art medical centre, designed by Glasgow based Reid Architects, was purposely built after the village doctor retired, rendering his converted living room and the temporary portacabins thereafter, unsuitable for use by the community.

Reid is one of the UK's largest architectural practices, best known for their regeneration schemes within the commercial sector and in particular focus on creating sustainable primary healthcare centres that meet the basic services required by the public.

The permanent base now boasts a modern reception area and waiting rooms, increased privacy in treatment rooms and improved car parking facilities.

The Fyfestone range is regularly specified for use on a wide range of projects throughout the UK, including sports and leisure centres, supermarkets, schools and colleges, sea defence and flood protection schemes, retail parks, conservation projects and hospitals, as well as executive housing. Its latest offerings include a golf club, a special needs school and a sports hall.

The £1.75m Deeside Golf Club, one of the leading clubs in the North-East of Scotland, recently benefited from an extensive makeover to mark its centenary. Fyfestone’s Enviromasonry Split in Birch was specified as it matched perfectly the local granite in the surrounding area of Royal Deeside.

The £13.9m Le Rondin School in Guernsey marked Fyfestone’s largest contract to date. £50K worth of Fyfestone Elite Tooled and Elite Polished in Slate was used for the Special Needs school completed this autumn.

This year also saw the specification of Premier Fairfaced for a new sports hall at Haresfoot Preparatory School in Hertfordshire, marking the first use of this particular product in the South of England.

Hamish Learmont, Commercial Manager at Fyfestone added: “We are proud to supply product for a scheme that has provided a much needed service in the community. The very nature of our products mean that modern commercial ventures can be planned without the limitations caused by aesthetic issues in natural stone areas.”
